Scholars from Shandong University attended the 7th Nishan Forum on World Civilizations

From September 27th to 28th , the 2021 China (Qufu) International Confucius Cultural Festival and the 7th Nishan Forum on World Civilizations were held in Qufu, Shandong Province, with the theme of "Dialogue among Civilizations and Global Cooperation". As one of the organizers of the forum and the academic seminars, Shandong University was deeply involved in organizing this academic event. Professor Xu Jialu, Former Vice Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee and President of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University, sent a congratulatory letter to the conference. Professor Fan Liming, President of Shandong University, Professor Wang Xuedian, Member of Standing Committee of 13th National Committee of CPPCC and Executive President of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University, Wang Junsong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shandong University, Kong Lingdong, Secretary of the Party Working Committee, Qingdao Campus of Shandong University, and Xing Zhanjun, Assistant to the President of Shandong University, attended the opening ceremony and participated in related activities.

Xu Jialu said that since the inception of Nishan Forum, it has received the recognition of a large number of people around the world. Every year, the forum focuses on a different theme, with in-depth dialogues and exchanges, more outcomes, deeper integration, and wider influence, playing an important role in building a community of human destiny. The forum has explored a new paradigm for interpreting Chinese civilization, and also has built a new platform for gathering research results from all sides and spreading the common values of all mankind. It has become a well-known brand for international humanistic exchanges. At a time when the world is undergoing the greatest change in a century, it is particularly important to promote mutual understanding among different nations and civilizations. It is urgent to draw wisdom and strength from the excellent traditional cultures of the world, including Confucianism, and to seek solutions to current problems. The theme of this year's Forum is "Dialogue among Civilizations and Global Cooperation", which fully reflects the basic rule and common pursuit that civilizations progress through exchanges and the world develops through cooperation.

Shandong University was deeply involved in the preparatory and organizational work for this year's Nishan Forum on World Civilizations. As the backbone of the academic team of the forum, the Collaborative Innovation Center of Confucian Civilization provided academic support for the forum. Relevant leaders and scholars from Shandong University played key roles in the important sessions of the forum. The keynote speech of the closing ceremony was chaired by Professor Wang Xuedian. Professor Huang Yushun of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University was one of the keynote speakers, delivering a speech on the topic of "On the Renewal of Confucian Civilization and the Construction of Global Civilization".

In the panel discussion of the forum, Professor Li Pingsheng, Professor Yan Binggang and Professor Zeng Zhenyu of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University, Professor Jiang Linchang of the School of History and Culture, Shandong University, Professor Fang Lei,the Dean of Qingdao Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shandong University, and Professor Lin Zhongjun of the Center for Zhouyi and Ancient Chinese Philosophy, Shandong University acted as moderators.

Professor Yan Binggang of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University, spoke on the topic of "Governing People and Law - From Mr. Xiao Gongquan's Comments on Xuncius". Professor Zeng Zhenyu of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University spoke on the topic of "Debate over Paths: A Shift of Pre-Qin Confucianism from Filial Piety First to Benevolence First ". Professor Ma Laiping of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University spoke on the topic of " Historical Significance of General Rule of Ancient Books of Qian-jia School- Inner Relation between Qian-jia School and Science from the General Rule of Ancient Books". Professor Zhai Kuifeng spoke on the topic of "Benevolence and Great Harmony of the East Asian World in Modern Times- Discussion with Kang Youwei, Park Eun-sik and Yuma Kojima at the core ". Professor Nie Jidong of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University spoke on the topic of "Writing Characteristics of Theory of Iron and Salt -Insufficiency and Change of Ritual Study in Emperors Zhao and Xuan’s Reign in Han Dynasty". Professor Qin Yanshi of Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University spoke on the topic of " ‘Great Harmony’ Concept and Charter of the United Nations-- Chinese Traditional Culture and Human Consensus for Peace". Professor Jiang Linchang of the School of History and Culture, Shandong University spoke on the topic of "Study Marxism Classics, Summarize the Laws of Chinese Civilization". Professor Fang Lei from of Dean of Qingdao Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shandong University, spoke on the topic of "Build Civilization Forms and Shape National Images". Professor Kong Qingfeng of the School of Economics, Shandong University, spoke on the topic of "Challenges to Globalization and Aspirations for Community of Shared Future for Mankind”. Professor Xie Wenyu of Center for Judaic and Inter-religious Studies, Shandong University, spoke on the topic of "Emotional Structure and Conceptual Systems in Civilization Dialogue". Professor Ma Qiuli of School of Marxism, Shandong University (Weihai) spoke on the topic of " Study on Mencius Thought of Peaceful Governance". Professor Lin Zhongjun of the Center for Zhouyi and Ancient Chinese Philosophy, Shandong University spoke on the topic of  "Formation and Semiotic Significance of the 'Books Science' in the Northern Song Dynasty". They presented their views on the dialogue of civilizations and global cooperation, the  inheritance and transmission of cultural power, and the construction of a community of human destiny.

Young scholars from Shandong University, represented by post-doctoral and doctoral candidate, Yu Qinke, Han Botao, Le Xiaoxu, Qu Bin, Tong Yuheng, Wang Luhan, Yao Yingge, Zhang Daokui, Zhang Tangning and Zhao Ruijun, participated in the discussion of the Youth Forum. The dialogue was held on the topics of "The Power of Culture in the Global Response to the Pandemic", "Diversity of Civilizations and a New Order of World Civilizations ", and "International Responsibility in Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind". The dialogue was characterized by novel academic insights and cutting-edge thinking.

Some young scholars from Shandong University participated in the activities related to the forum, and 10 volunteers from Advanced Institute of Confucian Studies, Shandong University and School of Economics, Shandong University, participated in the voluntary service of the forum, contributing their youthful strength.

The Nishan Forum on World Civilizations is named after the birthplace of Confucius, the great thinker and educator of ancient China. It is an international ideological and cultural dialogue and exchange platform with the theme of carrying out dialogue among different civilizations in the world, and the aim of promoting the excellent Chinese culture, facilitating cultural exchanges between China and the abroad, and promoting the building of a community of human destiny. The first Nishan Forum on World Civilizations was held in September 2010, and has been held for the six times since then. This year's China (Qufu) International Confucius Cultural Festival and the 7th Nishan Forum on World Civilizations is organized by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the International Confucian Association and the People's Government of Shandong Province. More than 490 guests and scholars from the United States, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Austria, Russia, India, Iran, Australia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Israel and other countries, as well as Chinese Taiwan, Chinese Hong Kong and many universities and research institutions in China participated in the forum.
